Are teachers able to write off their extra expenses that aren’t reimbursed through school/classroom funds?

An eligible educator can deduct up to $250 of qualified expenses. An eligible educator is a teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide for K-12 who worked at least 900 hours during the school year. Qualified expenses include books, supplies, equipment, and other materials used in the classroom.

NOTE: The educator expense deduction expired December 31, 2013. You may claim it on your tax year 2013 tax return. Under current law, the deduction is not available for tax years after 2013.
